Highlights of our Week August 17-19, 2011

We read the book David Goes to School by David Shannon.  In this book David goes to school but has trouble following the rules and listening to his teacher.  After we read the book and talked about the rules David didn't follow, we drew and colored our own versions of David.  After drawing and coloring, everyone wrote down a rule that David needed to follow.  While we talked about the rules that David wasn't following in his classroom we were talking about our classroom rules and why we have each rule.  The drawings of David are so cute and look great hanging in the hallway.
One of the David drawings with the rule, "Be quiet David"

All of our Davids hanging in the hall.

On Thursday, we labeled our room using signs with pictures.  While we labeled the room, we looked for parts of the words that we know.  For example, we used highlighting tape to highlight the ch in chair and the sh in pencil sharpener.

On Friday we made a graph of the boys and girls in our classroom.  It wasn't just any ol' graph.  This graph involved a candy bar!  Each child was given a HERSHEY'S bar.  Girls cut out the word SHE and boys cut out the word HE from the HERSHEY'S wrapper.  After the words were cut out, we put them on the graph in the correct column.  After the graph was complete, everyone enjoyed their candy bar!  What a GREAT way to spend a Friday afternoon!

Here is our graph.

After making the graph we talked about the results and made a chart for others to read.

We will start a full week of First Grade this week.  This week we will begin learning the routines of Reader's Workshop and Writer's Workshop.

First Day of First Grade!

Today was our first day!  We had a GREAT day.  We were very busy but everyone was very happy and seemed to enjoy themselves.  During Morning Meeting we shared about our summer.  We read First Grade Jitters and then made Jitter Juice.  The Jitter Juice-Sprite, Koolaid and Sherbert-made the jitters disappear!  Someone even said, "Mrs. Mefford, my belly already feels better!"

Jitter Juice...to make your first day of school jitters go away!

The rest of our way was super busy but lots of fun!  Thanks to all of my parents for sending me their precious babies!  I love them already and I can't wait to spend the rest of the year with them.

Ready for some First Graders!

The first day of school is tomorrow!  Oh, the emotions!  Happy, scared, worried, nervous, excited...the list could go on and on.  I am so happy to start the year.  Our room is ready. The desks are arranged, books are in the desks, folders are ready, and plans are made.

Here are a few pictures of our classroom.  All we need are some First Graders!

Our reading table.  Books baskets ready for books for Reader's Workshop.

Great things are going to happen this year!
