Zoo Day at School

The rain kept us from going to the zoo on Thursday, so we brought the zoo to our room!  Everyone brought in zoo stuffed animals and we started the morning by reading to our stuffed animals.  We watched the movie 'Madagascar' and had a snack of Teddy Grahams.  After lunch we finished 'Madagascar' and then everyone rotated through zoo activity stations.  We had zoo puzzles, playdoh with zoo animal cookie cutters, we created our own zoo with animals and blocks and then we played with everyone's stuffed zoo animal.  The day was a blast!  Below are a few pictures of our day.

Another group built this zoo.

The group that built this zoo, sorted out the animals by where they lived.  This group told me that the penguin is on "ice" and getting ready to jump in to the "water."

Each animal has a pen at this zoo.

Zoo Day was a huge hit!  Thanks so much for all of your support!

Don't forget our zoo trip has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 8th.

First Grade Patriotism

We honored two of the greatest US presidents during our Patriotism unit.  Everyone made a George Washington and an Abraham Lincoln.  While we made the art projects, we talked about how important these presidents were in helping our country grow.

This George Washington looks like he has something to say.

A very sly looking George Washington.

We ended our Patriotism Unit by studying patriotic symbols, including the Statue of Liberty.  We did a directed drawing of the Statue of Liberty and the results were adorable.  This is one of my favorite projects.  Everyone heard the same set of directions, but each Lady of Liberty turned out differently!

A very serious Statue of Liberty!

I know that I am almost a month late with this post, but I had to share these projects with you.  They are some of my favorite projects that we do all year.  I hope you enjoy them as well!

100th Day of First Grade

YAY for the 100th Day of First Grade!  Our "theme" for the 100th day was a the 100th Day of School Rodeo.  Many of the activities we did today were Rodeo themed.  What a fun day!  Here are few pictures to show off our fun day!
Our door-welcoming everyone to the 100th day of First Grade!
Our creations using 100!  I have some very creative kiddos!

Love the eyelashes on this caterpillar!

Snowman!  She traced the one so she would have two arms!  So smart!

An ostrich and the sun.  The one is the tail!

This one just makes me smile!

Gravedigger.  The blue lines are the bleachers and there is a car waiting to be crushed and a ramp for Gravedigger to jump.  This little guy went to the Monster Truck show this weekend!

Catching Up!

First, please accept my apologies for not keeping the blog up.  I had good intentions each night to post about our fun at school, but LIFE kept getting in the way.  I did take lots of pictures of the things we have been doing so I could share them with each of you.

We started December by making a Santa Countdown "calendar."  It was a bit challenging because we had to write the numbers backwards from 25.  Everyone did a great job and I hope the calendars helped with the Christmas countdown excitement.  I made one for our classroom and the  our class secretary
(our helper) cut off a number each day.

All finished, ready for the countdown to begin!

To add to the Christmas excitement, we made "Rudie the Reindeer" Snazzy Snack.  A fabulous family from our classroom signed up for and donated the supplies for the snack.  Each child has a cookbook with the recipes for the snacks, and we make the snacks together following the recipe.
"Rudie" was a fun snack to make and to eat!  YUM!

We started Unit 4 in math in December.  We will explore place value in this unit.
We will continue the unit in January.

During Social Studies, we spent two weeks studying the past with a focus on Pioneer Days.  A first grade family brought their horses and covered wagon and took all of the first graders for a ride.
It was so much fun!
Before we took our ride on the wagon.  Everyone talked about the Horse and Wagon ride and asked a million times if it was our turn yet!  So much fun!

Petting the horses after our ride.
We made Snowman Christmas tree ornaments for our families.  While the idea was super cute, I owe our custodians major for coming in and vacuuming up our HUGE mess.  The "snow" was everywhere by the end of the day-the floor, our hair, our clothes, inside the desks, in the hall and on our backpacks and the list goes on and on.  Oh my!  Again, it seemed like a great idea at the time!  We did end up with super cute ornaments.  I hope your child enjoyed hanging them on your tree!

Notice the "snow" all over his desk.  What you can't see is the "snow" on the floor, his shirt, his hair, his neighbor, etc.  But it was fun and that is all that matters!

The finished product!

We completed an Elf glyph.  A glyph tells a story without words.  For example for this glyph, if you like candy canes then draw red stripes on your elf's legs.  This is one of my favorite holiday projects.  Each elf is different, just like my kiddos!

Our elves!
We mixed up a little Christmas and math by making peppermints with addition facts.  Each child made their own peppermint and added addition facts to the peppermint.  I covered them with Saranwrap and they turned out so cute!

One last Christmas activity to share.  During Reader's Workshop we practiced identifying nouns and determining if they are people, places or things.  We made a book of Christmas Nouns.  Below are a few of my favorites.

Love the carolers!
Reindeer-and important 'thing' we need for Christmas!
Please noticed the lights on Grandma's House!

Rudolph

I hope that all of my first graders and their families are enjoying the time off.  I have already enjoyed a much slower pace and I am looking forward to sleeping in a few more times.
I will see everyone in January!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Majority Rules

Election season has come and gone.  Last week, our students had several opportunities to vote.  We started the week listening to the First Grade Student Teachers' campaign speeches.  One student teacher dressed up as an Oreo Cookie, another dressed up as a Chocolate Chip cookie.  Oreo and Chocolate Chip gave their campaign speeches to First Graders.  On Wednesday, each First Grader voted for their favorite cookie and received an 'I Voted' sticker.  After school the votes were counted and the winner is.....

The winner of the 2011 First Grade Cookie Election.  YUM!

On Thursday we ate the winning cookie, Oreo, at lunch!  The election always gets the kids excited about voting and deciding which cookie to vote for.

In our classroom we talked about elections.  We talked about how the candidate that receives the majority of votes, and we talked about what majority means, wins the election.  Then we did some more voting.  Students had to listen to two choices and then choose one thing to vote for.  The choice that received the majority of votes won.  After we voted, we illustrated the choice that won the majority of votes.  Below are a few of my favorites.

The majority of our class likes pizza.

The majority of our class likes apples.  Love the gigantic apple.

The majority of our class likes warm weather.

My personal favorite, the majority of our class likes the Hokies!

The majority of our class likes red.

The majority of our class likes to buy lunch at school.  Can you see the lunch tray that this little guy is drawing?

The majority of our class likes purple.  With some reluctance, the boys voted for this one.

The majority of our class likes chocolate ice cream.  YUM!

The majority of our class and Mrs. Mefford like snowy days!

The majority of our class likes pepperoni pizza.

The majority of our class likes chocolate milk.
