Highlights of First Grade-end of August

  • Beginning Sound Sorts in our Spelling Notebooks.  These sorts are a practice of how the sorts will be glued in for our spelling sorts later on in the year.

  • We celebrated the 10th day of First Grade on Tuesday, August 30th.  Zero the Hero came through before school and left everyone a treat on their desk.  Including a Zero treat to eat!

  •
  • Each day we are building stamina during Read to Self and Read to Someone.  During Read to Self, everyone is independently reading books that are a good fit for them.  We spent several days talking about how books are like shoes.  We choose books that are a good fit for us-not too hard and not too easy.   Read to Someone is not only fun, but a great way to practice fluency while reading.

  •  Mefford Money has been a huge hit!  Everyone wants it and everyone is willing to work hard to get it.  So far this year we have had 2 "cash ins" and 2 reward days.  We cash in on Thursdays and on Friday we enjoy the rewards.  The most popular are eating lunch with a friend in the room and bringing a stuffed animal to sit with you during the day.  Other favorites include taking your shoes off and wearing a hat.  I am proud of how hard everyone works to earn Mefford Money and how important it is to them that they earn the money.
As you can see we continue to be very busy.  I hope to get back in the groove of posting to the blog and keeping everyone up to date with our activities.  Thanks for your support in making First Grade GREAT!

  1. I love how you are doing your word study notebooks. I have never thought to do them sideways. Great idea. I will def. do that next year.
